2013 In One Word

With the year coming to a close, I reached out to a few of my reader/writer/blogger friends and asked them to give me ONE WORD to describe their year of 2013.  It's difficult to sum up the year in just one word, I came to realize (and so did a lot of others).  Do we focus on the good? The bad? What we're most proud of? Our struggles? Or our strengths?  So much can happen in the span of one year.

The idea behind this post comes from a word wall.  In school we use this as an aid when learning new content.  Teachers display words on their wall to engage their students and help them build their vocabulary.  As a soon to be teacher myself, I thought I'd do something similar, but put a twist on it.  In this post I'm using these words as a reflection, to look back on the year and see where we've been, but also as a guide to look at where we want to go.  It's important to reflect so that we can move forward. I hope this inspires others to create their own word wall.

So tell me... which word would YOU put on
your word wall to describe the year 2013?

For those who participated in this, feel free to identify your word in the comments below.  Or keep it anonymous, whatever you like!  Can anyone guess which word is mine?  I'll give you a hint: some of life's challenges this year brought me unexpected happiness.

  3. Perseverance was mine! Boy oh boy am I glad to see this year gone. So many good things but there was so much struggle for me. I told Will I don't know how I didn't just lay down and quit this year. So many tears, so much inner turmoil and isolating myself...just keeping it all in. But here I am...still kickin. So perseverance was kind of perfect. If you do this in 2014 I hope to have a plethora of happier words to choose from! :)

  4. Dern, I was going to guess Perseverance for G! But it's so fitting for you too, Jamie!

My word was Beginnings! For Lucy and my new job and all the new things! Very exciting. :)

Okay, since your word wasn't Perseverance, I'll guess Adapting?

  6. Transition was my word!

I loved this idea when I first received your email, and the final product turned out better than I ever could have imagined. It's such a great way to get a better perspective on the past year and to see how our experiences differed. I was happy to see that almost all of the words were positive. Even ones that implied struggle or difficulties over the past year, like 'Perseverance' or 'Recovery', demonstrate triumph and tenacity in the face of said problems.

  7. This is a lovely post. 2013 in one word, mine would be "Survival". It's been a confusing and tough year for me but I pulled through!
Your word I'm guessing is either Serendipitous or Rollercoaster. xD

  8. Mine was renewal. Which I probably would have picked out on my own, but you also reminded me of earlier today. Yours is serendipitous, right? I'm pretty sure you told me that, unless you changed it. I really like "buoyancy" props to whoever picked that one!

Thanks for doing this and including me. It's interesting to see all the words. So many of them have negative or sad connotations, but my guess is that they were meant in kind of a cleansing/hopeful way?

  9. Love seeing all of these great words together. Looks like I might not have been the only one with a "bittersweet" year. This was the hardest year I've faced, yet I had my first book sale to lean on. SO looking forward to 2014!
I'm going to guess your word is Serendipitous...
Thanks for inviting me to participate :)

  10. My word would definitely be "Interesting". I've had a lot of ups and downs in my personal life and my blogging life has been quite the experience; lot of lessons.

  13. I'm so pleased that you asked me to be a part of this project! I think it turned out fantastic, and it's fun seeing all these words put together and trying to figure out who contributed what. My word was very fitting for my 2013, especially the latter half. Here's to hoping I have another amazing word to describe my year this year at the end of it!
