Received: advanced reader's copy from the author, thanks Jennifer!
For Erin Blackwell, majoring in creative writing at the New York City college of her dreams is more than a chance to fulfill her ambitions--it's her ticket away from the tragic memories that shadow her family's racehorse farm in Kentucky. But when she refuses to major in business and take over the farm herself someday, her grandmother gives Erin's college tuition and promised inheritance to their maddeningly handsome stable boy, Hunter Allen. Now Erin has to win an internship and work late nights at a coffee shop to make her own dreams a reality. She should despise Hunter . . . so why does he sneak into her thoughts as the hero of her latest writing assignment?
Then, on the day she's sharing that assignment with her class, Hunter walks in. He's joining her class. And after he reads about himself in her story, her private fantasies about him must be painfully clear. She only hopes to persuade him not to reveal her secret to everyone else. But Hunter devises his own creative revenge, writing sexy stories that drive the whole class wild with curiosity and fill Erin's heart with longing. Now she's not just imagining what might have been. She's writing a whole new ending for her romance with Hunter . . . except this story could come true. {taken from goodreads.com}
My love for Jennifer Echols is endless, her books winning me over time & time again. When I contacted her on a whim, wanting to read this book, I was blown away by her personal response saying yes, I can read an early copy! Definite fangirl-ness went down that day. Her ability to pull you in and feel as though you know the characters is obvious in every book she writes. This one in particular intrigued me because it was a story, centered around another story.
Erin is a gifted writer, hoping to win an internship so that she can fulfill her dreams of becoming a published author, and not the owner of her family's horse farm. She goes against her grandmother's wishes and follows her writing path to New York, in turn losing all financial strings attached to her family's inheritance. The idea of chasing after what you want, and not following someone else's path, is bold and daring. While Erin is chasing down this dream, she encounters a boy from her past. And he's not just any boy. He is Hunter, the stable boy for which she's written her latest piece about, as well as the stable boy who is planning to take over her inheritance. The two immediately clash finding themselves in the same writing program. The choice that Erin felt so confident about making before has suddenly become heavy on her mind. Is writing really worth giving up her family's horse farm? And why is Hunter in her head way more than she'd like to admit?
Jennifer Echols brings the angst and tension once again. I was constantly turning the pages, hoping and wondering, what will happen next between Erin and Hunter. Though the build felt a little shaky at some points, over all the story kept me engaged. It was also interesting to read an "older" young adult book for a change. Since these characters are college-age, the material had a more mature tone in parts. Being someone who has experienced the excitement and confusion of those crucial years after high school, I felt myself relating to different aspects of the story. Not quite an adult, but not exactly a teenager anymore either. If you're a fan of Jennifer Echols writing, I suggest picking up this book. Her stories are always unique and her passion for tension among characters is always evident!
